Fantasies in metal
A visiting professor in metal jewellery, Dr David LaPlantz, shows a chain bracelet he has made to Mrs Averil Brown, chairwoman of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Silversmiths’ Guild. Dr LaPlantz teaches at the Humbolt State University in Arcata, California. He is in New Zealand on a Fulbright scholarship, teaching and giving workshops throughout the country. One such workshop is now being held at the Arts
Centre. It will end tomorrow. Dr LaPlantz gave a public lecture on contemporary American jewellery at the centre last evening. He said yesterday he had committed his life to being a teacher and an artist. “My fantasies, my dreams and my hopes are often played out in my metals,” he said.
