Israelis’ new armed hydrofoil

NZPA-Reuter Tel Aviv The Israeli Navy says it has commissioned a 90km/h missile-armed hydrofoil called the “Flipper.” The United States-built craft has been fitted with sophisticated radar detection equipment, a twin-bar-relled 30mm gun, and two Gabriel and four Harpoon ship-to-ship missiles, a military communique said. The vessel was twice as fast as conventional missile boats and highly manoeuverable, it said.

The Israeli Navy can use the hydrofoil, which skims above the waves, to intercept high-speed small craft of the type Palestinian guerrillas have used in attempts to attack Israel from the sea. It has a range of 1000 nautical miles.
