Changes at Marsden Pt after shutdown

PA Wellington The five-month shutdown of the Marsden Point oil refinery started yesterday. Within two weeks much of the 21-year-old existing refinery will be demolished. By the end of November a totally reconstructed refinery will process oil. Most of the old plant will either be scrapped, modified or relocated. The purpose of the shutdown is to replace parts of the old refinery with up-

graded sections to cope with a bigger load and different oils and processes. The more sophisticated $lBOO million plant will be able to take heavier crude oil and break it down into a wide range of products. No petrol will be refined during the shutdown. Oil companies have arranged shipments of thousands of tonnes of refined products to keep vehicles and industry running until the end of November.
