Goalkeeper quits

Steve Baker has resigned from Christchurch Brother United’s team for the rest of the Rothmans Soccer League season. The big goal-keeper, who was brought out by the club from England last season, is dissatisfied with certain aspects of the club. However, he stressed that he is not “anti-United. Far from it.”

A lack of any sort of goalkeeper training in the club is part of the problem. All goal-keepers in the national league needed specialised training, he added. Baker admitted that had he known of the transfer deadline of June 30, he would have been looking for another club.

“I want to play football. I

want to enjoy it,” he said. “But if you’re not enjoying it you shouldn’t play.” Baker said he would happily help out the team if his replacement, Alan Stroud, was injured. Stroud has played his soccer as a striker since early last year, after starting the 1984 season in goal for 4XO Dunedin City. For the rest of the season, the 22-year-old Londoner intends playing for one of the club’s lower grade teams as an outfielder.
