Driver breathalysed
NZPA-AAP Melbourne The Horsham trotting driver, Clive Rees, became the first person to fail a breathalyser test at a Moonee Valley trotting meeting since new rules were introduced earlier this year. Victorian Harness Racing Board stewards randomly select a number of drivers for a breathalyser test before the start of each race. Stewards would not divulge Rees’ alleged blood alcohol reading except to say that it exceeded .02. The legal limit on Victoria’s roads is .05. Stewards substituted Kevin Murray for Rees to drive Neat Mirage in the Trotters Handicap, and fined Rees sAust2oo for his over-indulgence. Ironically, Neat Mirage never made it to the start — he was withdrawn on veterinary advice.
