Abortion service

Sir,—Dr Hay is concerned about “the fate of the patients with possibly unwanted children in the future,” if staff cannot be found for Lyndhurst Hospital; and Mr McGuigan accuses anti-abortion groups of “flouting the law” (“The Press,” June 27). Is Dr Hay not concerned about the fate of the 1000 unwanted children currently being aborted in Christchurch every year? She implies, unfortunately correctly, that at present they are aborted on the ground of being unwanted. However, this is not a legitimate indication in the Contraception, Sterilisation and Abortion Act. These abortions are being certified under the guise of serious danger to the mental health of the mother in order to comply with the legal formula. This, not peaceful picketing, is flouting the law. And the Canterbury Hospital Board wants to provide the means by which it can be carried out. — Yours, etc., A. J. and E. R. SIMPSON. June 28, 1985.
