Inter-club hockey round

By

KEVIN TUTTY

Four of the six Christ-

church teams progressed to the second round of the national inter-club knockout men’s hockey competition yesterday, one was eliminated and another left in limbo.

The team to exit from the competition was Kent Prier Redcliffs. It lost 0-1 to Taieri in extra time and missed a glorious chance to equalise late in extra time from a penalty stroke. The match was played in Dunedin.

High School Old Boys, which was scheduled to play United of Dunedin at Porritt Park did not take the field. The United team van had mechanical problems at Rakaia and insufficient time was left for the match to be played. The teams have until late August to agree to an acceptable date to play the game, and the present feeling is that the teams will meet in Timaru at a date to be decided.

If a new date cannot be agreed on, Old Boys will probably win by default. The teams who progressed to the second round were: Liquorland Harewood who beat Otago University A 4-0 in Dunedin; Woolston who beat College Old Boys (Ashburton) 3-0 in Christ-

church; Daniel Visser Sydenham who beat Otago University B 4-0 in Christchurch; and Pegasus who beat Tinwald 4-0 in Ashburton.

Harewood had its match again against Otago University A settled by the interval when it led 3-0. It was a vastly improved Harewood side from that which struggled to a 2-0 win against Linwood in the Christchurch senior competition on Saturday. Harewood had about 80 per cent of possession and on a heavy ground with longish grass it passed the ball about effectively. Chris Leslie and lan Riach on the Harewood left flank showed more combination than they have in the last couple of weeks. Riach scored two of the goals and Leslie one from a penalty corner. Pat Hayde scored the other goal. The Harewood coach, Mr Tony Hayde, asked his forwards to keep their dribbling to a minimum and their passing at a maximum, and they obliged. Redcliffs was disappointed with its performance. It failed to take advantage of several chances in ordinary time. Four minutes into extra time Taieri scored from a penalty stroke. Redcliffs

worked diligently to equalise and late in extra time forced a penalty stroke, but Brent Stanley pushed the shot outside the goal. Sydenham at present on the bottom of the Christchurch championship, enjoyed being the dominant team.

Its forwards played the short passing game competently, especially in the second half when it scored three goals. Lionel Wong, Terry Waghorn (2) and Duncan Mears scored for Sydenham.

There was no score at the interval in the WoolstonCollege Old Boys game, but after the interval Woolston produced some of its best hockey of the season. Its passing was positive and accurate, and there was a sense of urgency, particularly among the forwards. Stephen Cox, Mark Rapson and Malcolm Woods scored the Woolston goals. Pegasus had a rare success. It coped well with a bumpy ground. Its trapping was superior to the opposition and it passed the ball with more authority. It was 2-0 ahead at the interval.

Darryl McEwen at centre forward scored two goals for Pegasus, and Greg Clark and Andrew Dove each scored one.
