Protesters aim to stop rugby plane

PA Rotorua The anti-tour movement is determined to ensure that the All Blacks’ plane does not leave for South Africa, according to Hart’s leader, Mr John Minto, in Rotorua yesterday. Speaking at a ceremony at the Rotorua war memorial, Mr Minto said the Coalition Against the Tour would now launch a comprehensive four-week campaign to stop the All Blacks going to South Africa. If the tour went ahead many black people would be killed, he said.

“It is not their responsibility to stop the tour, but it is up to the coalition to ensure that the All Blacks’ plane never leaves the country,” he said. A meeting of anti-tour campaigners held at Rotorua at the week-end drew up a strategy aimed at Rugby Union councillors and potential All Blacks to tour South Africa. Mr Minto said in an interview that the anti-tour movement would also make a renewed approach to the Government to “front up” on the issue and put pressure on the Rugby Union to call off the tour.

Antf-tour groups were still confident the tour could be stopped, he said, but much depended on the next four weeks of planned direct action against the Rugby Union, and “18 guilty men who made the decision to go”
