Moderate tone by Greek P.M.
NZPA-Reuter Athens Greece’s Prime Minister, Dr Andreas Papandreou, giving his first main policy speech since being reelected on June 2, toned down his usual anti-Western language and also indicated that he might try for friendlier relations with neighbouring Turkey. Addressing Parliament, he avoided criticising the United States despite President Ronald Reagan’s call for a boycott of Athens airport. Official Greek statements
have denounced Mr Reagan for the call, made after the hijacking of an American airliner after it took off from Athens. But Dr Papandreou merely repeated his determination to shut down the four United States military bases in Greece by 1988, when the five-year extension on their lease expires. Dr Papandreou was apparently responding to an olive branch extended by the American Secretary of State, Mr George Shultz, to Greece over the continuing hijack crisis.
