Russians rescue refugees

NZPA-AP Manila Philippines officials said at the week-end that 1 a Soviet ship had rescued 37 Vietnamese refugees in the South China Sea last week—the first Soviet rescue of people fleeing Soviet-backed Vietnam. Neither Soviet nor United Nations officials could say where the ship or refugees are. Javier de Riedmatten, Manila representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, said “The only thing we know is that 37 boat people were rescued at sea by a Russian vessel.” He said he had learned about the rescue on Monday when the Philippine Coast Guard relayed to his office a radio message from the master of the Soviet ship Poisk saying they had picked up the boat people and wanted permission to take them to the Philippines. Mr de Riedmatten said that he did not know what the Manila Government would do about the refugees. A Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said that she knew nothing about them, and that the Ministry had received no official request concerning them.
