Canty schools do well

Canterbury schools performed with distinction in Saturday’s Mount Cook Lines New Zealand intersecondary schools’ crosscountry championships in Levin.

In conditions regarded as the worst in the event’s 12year history, Canterbury teams notched up a number of successes and along with other South Island schools generally handled the wet conditions well.

Tina Sharp of Rangiora High School, ran to victory in the junior girls’ event with Caroline Barry (Christchurch Girls’ High School) in fifth, and Pip Deprie (Burnside High School) in eighth place. Burnside High School was third in the teams’ event. It went one better in the senior girls’ event ending in second place while Rachael Deprie (Burnside High School) was the best of the Canterbury runners with a ninth placing. Results:—

Senior girls — 4km: Tracey Kennedy (Kingswill High), 1; Sonia Barry (New Plymouth Girls), 2; Andrea Stuart (Otaki College), 3. Team of three: Wellington Girls 1. Team of six: Southland Girls I.

Senior boys. — 6km: Martin Holmes, (Wanganui High), 1; Allan Bunce, (Southland Boys), 2; Duane Humphries (Shirley Boys), 3. Team of three: Shirley Boys 1. Team of six: Wellington College 1. Junior girls — 3km: Tina Sharp (Rangiora High), 1; Susan Barrowman, (Karamu High), 2; Julie Zanders (Kamo College), 3. Teams of three and six: Awatapu College 1. Junior boys — 4km: Neil Sargison (Hastings Boys), 1; Richard Lindross (Shirley Boys), 2; Andrew ' Prescott (Auckland Grammar), 3. Teams of three and six: Wellington College.
