Converse Canterbury in touch with leaders

Converse Canterbury kept in touch with the leaders of the Countrywide Men’s Basketball League championship after the weekend's matches.

Canterbury faced one of its toughest challenges of the season with a “double header” in Auckland against Ponsonby on Saturday and the league trendsetters, DB, at the YMCA Stadium yesterday afternoon. Against Ponsonby, Canterbury trailed 55-56 at halftime. In similar circumstances to the first round game at Cowles Stadium on May 25, which Canterbury won 103-97, the Rams accelerated in the second half to end up easy winners, 115101.

The Canterbury captain, Clyde Huntley, finally struck form.

He scored 45 points, including six three-pointers, while Bert Knops got 18,

Eddie McLeod (used in the second half only) 17, and lan Webb 14.

Ponsonby’s Ronnie Joyner was the high scorer for Ponsonby with 60 points, which included 10 threepointers. Yesterday afternoon’s Canterbury-DB match was also similar to the first round game in Christchurch, the exception being that the Auckland side won on this occasion and now remains two points clear in the run for the championship semifinals in Wellington in early August. DB won 99-93.

It was a typical Canter-bury-DB match; a low score, tight marking on both boards, and Canterbury again trying to come from behind.

For Canterbury it was vital for it to win one away game at the week-end and it made it, which should al-

most assuredly see it to the semi-finals in Wellington. Canterbury now shares second place with the reigning champion, Exchequer Saints (Wellington), both on 20 points. Palmerston North is fourth and Nelson has slumped to fifth, although its remaining matches should result in a higher placing. Apart from Canterbury and Nelson’s performances, the main interest at the week-end was Leopard Criterion Napier playing at home on Saturday evening, and then Saints yesterday afternoon.

Napier’s new “coach,” Jim Manning, could not believe his luck when Napier won its first league game of the season against a declining New Plymouth, 81-79. But reality struck yesterday when Saints played in championship winning form to win 123-103.
