Devoy takes title
PA Auckland Susan Devoy, the world’s top woman squash player, beat the defending champion Robyn Blackwood to capture the Auckland open title yesterday. Devoy (Hamilton), making her first tournament appearance since winning her second successive British Open title two months ago, defeated Blackwood 9-2, 9-4, 9-2. Devoy took only 30 minutes to overcome Blackwood, who was playing at her home club, North Shore. “I felt I was hitting the ball all right,” said Devoy, “but there will need to be more sharpening up.” Hugh Leabourn (Remuera) took the men’s title, defeating titleholder Danny McQueen (Geyser City) 9-5, 9-4, 9-4, in the final. Leabourn, a 21-year-old Auckland law student, played confidently, around the front of the court, keeping a tight and full length. He was left out of the national men’s squad named recently, and after beating squad members, McQueen and Anthony McMurtrie, on his way to the title, hopes to be reconsidered.
