Latham named as Canty full-back

Rod Latham will be the full-back and Robbie Deans is in the Canterbury reserves for Taranaki’s Ranfurly Shield challenge at Lancaster Park tomorrow. Latham, instead of Kieran Keane, is one of two changes from the Canterbury team which beat King Country in the first challenge of the season last week.

The other is Dennis Woods for Adrian Boyd on the right wing. This will be Wood’s first taste of shield rugby and it is a little surprising that he has been given a run at the expense of Joe Leota, who is seemingly being kept in cold storage by the Canterbury coach, Mr Alex Wyllie. Latham had announced that he was unavailable for

first class rugby this winter. However, when approached by Mr Wylie last week he agreed to make himself available for this match.

Deans has replaced Colin Williamson in the reserves and Tony Thorpe, now fit again, is the back-up lock instead of Pat O’Gorman.

Mr Wyllie watched Deans play for Glenmark on Satur-

day and said yesterday that Deans was “again a part of the team.” However, he would go no further than saying he has his reasons for playing Latham at fullback ahead of Deans tomorrow.

The team is: — Rod Latham; Dennis Woods, Victor Simpson, Craig Green; Warwick Taylor, Wayne Smith; Bruce Deans; Dale Atkins; Jock Hobbs,

Albert Anderson, Andy Earl, Don Hayes (captain); Murray Davie, John Buchan, Chris Earl. Reserves: Alan Lindsay, Wayne Burleigh, Robbie Deans; Brett Dixon, Tony Thorpe, Robin Penney.

The Taranaki team announced last evening is:— Kieran Crowley; Bryce Robins, Murray Watts’, Tony Arnold; Charlie McAlister, Brian Quin; Dave Loveridge; Colin Cooper,

Bay Wishnosky, Lindsay Thomson, Peter Hall, Jamie Connell or Mervyn Dudley; Donald Jennings, Lyall Bunn, Warren Bunn. Reserves: Ra Moko, Mark King, Tim Coppiestone; Connell or Dudley, John Plumtree, Dennis Schumacher.

0 Footnote: Robbie Deans has been included in the North Canterbury A squad of 26 players for its forthcoming representative games.
