Ellesmere rugby competition

A makeshift Burnham side gave more than token resistance before being defeated 2214 by Lincoln on the Lincoln domain in the Ellesmere rugby competition. Never certain of team composition because of army commitments, Burnham played an open bustling style of rugby aimed at upsetting Lincoln’s patterned play and were largely successful in their tactics. They did however, whenever possible, take the game to their opponents and looked dangerous on more than a few occasions. Lincoln kept in the game through some very inept play. Two interceptions posted ten of the Burnham points. In the second spell with the wind at their backs, Lincoln several times in or on their 22m line, elected to tap and run from penalties and free kicks when they should have worked the sideline into their opponents’ territory as Burnham had done in the first spell. Disrupted in their efforts to completely control the game, the Lincoln forwards nevertheless gained the lion’s share of possession and for this they could thank Dave Moffat, Daryl Petherham, Lindsay Norton and captain, Phil Kortegast. The pick of the Lincoln backs were Gary McManus, Graham Jordan and Brent Timms. Burnham were ably led by Barry Vyrenhoek in the forwards with support from Andy McLean, Trent and Jesse Hill and coach, Wayne Hutchison, pressganged to make up the numbers for the day. Prominent in the backs were Nick Osborne, Carl Steadman and Clinton Savage.
