Juventus will lodge appeal
NZPA-Reuter . Rome Juventus are to appeal against the sanctions imposed by the European Football Union after last month’s stadium riot in Brussels, club sources said yesterday. The appeal, details of which are being prepared, is expected to be lodged by the Italian club this week. Juventus officials have criticised the sanctions which mean they must play their next two home European games in an empty stadium. The teams’s sports director, Francesco Morini, said
the decision risked causing further incidents.
“How can you keep fans away from the stadium? It will lead to enormous problems in keeping public order,” he said. A Juventus player, Stefano Tacconi, said: “Playing behind locked doors is a nightmare. The fans give you energy. They’re 40 per cent of our strength.” The punishment came after the riots at the European Cup final between Juventus and Liverpool in Brussels on May 29 when 38 people, mainly Italians, died.
