Coll wins in squash tournament
The youthful Greymouth player, Adele Coll, consolidated her claims for a place in this year’s Canterbury women’s inter-district squash team with a fine win in the Urban Sports Apparel open tournament yesterday. Coll, seeded third, beat the veteran No. 2 seed, Kathy Hargreaves, in four games in the semi-finals on Saturday and went on to shade the very capable top seed, Freda Walker, in yesterday’s final.
In the final of the women only tournament Walker took the first game very easily, winning seven points in one hand, but Coll rallied strongly to win the match in four
games. Coll’s strong-driving game was very effective and her play at the front of the court was also good. Walker looked likely to take the match the full distance when she led 6-1 in the fourth, but a very determined Coll, retrieving particularly well, fought back to take the next six points and eventually the game, 10-8.
