Maoris down Waikato

The New Zealand Maoris rugby team scored three tries on a rain-soaked Rugby Park at Hamilton on Saturday to beat Waikato, 23-6. A superior first-half forward performance, which saw Paul Tuoro, Marty Brooke, and Wayne Shelford dominate the line-outs and the whole pack drive relentlessly forward in the wet, enabled the Maoris to take control and go to halftime ahead, 16-6. Frano Botica, at first fiveeighths, the half-back. Dean Kenny, and the centre, Steven Pokere, were particularly sharp. Waikato’s forwards produced much more commitment and were more competitive in all phases of play in the second half, the shining light being the mobile lock, Michael Speight, whose excellent two-handed takes put Waikato back on a fiar with the Maoris in the ine-outs.
