Spectators at Rugby Park on Saturday might have wondered if own goals had been introduced into rugby. In the second half of the curtain-raiser it was announced over the public address system that R. Smith bad scored a try for Marist. A few minutes later the same voice stated that R. Smith had scored a try for Merivale-Papanui. The announcements were correct — the try-scorer for
Marist was Richard Smith and for Merivale-Papanui Ross Smith, and both men are wings. Then came the main game and the first scoring was a dropped goal for Albion by G. James. Some time later Christchurch opened its account with a try to G. James. And this time they were both Grant James — Albion’s one being the fullback and Christchurch’s being the centre.
