Colts beat Wanganui
PA Wanganui Excellent goal kicking from the Otago fullback, Greg Cooper, was a feature of the New Zealand Colts 12-3 victory over Wanganui at Spriggens Park on Saturday. Considering the wet, muddy nature of the ground it was quite a good display by the Colin Meads-coached Colts, who scored the only try of the day. Cooper missed two of his five shots at goal but he landed two superb kicks with the heavy ball — the conversion from a sideline try scored by the Auckland winger, Basil Ake, and a wide-angle penalty. Meads was quite happy with the over-all result, especially the scrummaging, although he indicated there was work to be done in the lineouts.
For Wanganui it was the fifth straight defeat for the season, but the- team was far from disgraced, with the forwards matching the Colts in most departments apart from the scrums, while the backs tried hard but lacked finish.
