‘Sweat shops’ re-emerge

NZPA London A new drive against “sweat shops” at home is being mounted in London to prevent exploitation of women who can earn as little as 20p (56c) an hour.

The Southwark Council in London has discovered a reemergence of sweat shops where homeworkers in its area are being paid £1 ($2.83) to make a dress which has a retail price of £2O to £3O ($56 to $B4). The council has reported that businesses are preying on many women who are forced to work at home in conditions which would fail health and safety laws for factories. The women may be bring-

ing up families, or be from ethnic minorities unable to speak English and unaware of their rights. The council has appointed a former homeworker to advise workers of their rights and is issuing a booklet on tax and national insurance in Greek, Spanish, Turkish, Vietnamese and other Asian languages. It also plans to organise the homeworkers into cooperatives to better their working situations.
