Trial for leprosy vaccine

NZPA-Reuter London A vaccine to prevent leprosy, one of the world’s oldest recorded diseases, will be tested in Africa later this year, a British charity has announced. The British Leprosy Relief Association said the trial would take place among 12,000 people in a southern African State, where it has treated more than 40,000 patients in the last 20 years. The association said it would be the first significant trial of the vaccine in the world. Its effectiveness in preventing the disfiguring disease would not be determined for 10 years.
