Pilots upset over examiner shortage

PA Auckland A critical shortage of Civil Aviation Division pilot examiners threatens Air New Zealand’s training programme and has angered pilots. An August examination for the airline pilot rating has been cancelled, delaying the progress of some of 80 new pilots hired by the airline this year. Other flying organisations have been affected. The president of the Airline Pilots’ Association, Captain lan McAulay, said it was

concerned because pilots were prevented from getting command positions. The division has only one pilot examiner. The division’s controller of personnel licensing, Mr Brian Stanley-Hunt, said the problem was partly because of the heavy airline demand for pilots. As a result, a commercial pilots examination scheduled for May was also cancelled. The airline pilots’ examination will now take place in November.
