Midwifery
Sir,—There has just been a decade for women and yet midwives in New Zealand fear that they are being phased out of the health system. Childbirth is a woman’s domain, yet men still dominate it. I call for- the urgent assessment of maternity services promised in the Government’s election manifesto. The Government also stated that it supported the option of planned home birth and therefore the need for an expanded domiciliary midwife service. Without midwives there will be no option of home birth; Birth is a very demanding and emotional time and the support of a caring, professional midwife is essential, wherever the birth takes place. I support the call by midwives for a separate specialised course with more emphasis on clinical experience and want to see domiciliary midwives’ pay increased to a level in keeping with the skilled care these, women give and the responsibility they accept. — Yours, etc., SUE PIERCEY.
