Canterbury to defend Aust. Rules title
There have been only two days on which Canterbury has not held the George Lanyon Trophy, for inter-provincial supremacy in Australian Rules. That was in 1983, when Canterbury lost the title to Wellington at the national championships, but regained it in a special challenge two days later. This week-end Canterbury will take the trophy north, defending it against Wellington on Queen’s Birthday after warm-up matches against Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt on the previous day. Although Wellington failed by only two points in its challenge last season, Canterbury is confident of making a good showing against its traditional rival. The Canterbury side is one of the strongest the' province has fielded. An additional reason for Canterbury to do well is that two members of the side, Mark and Ricky Lanyon, are sons of the trophy donor, George Lanyon, a stalwart supporter of rules. The Canterbury players are: Dean McNair, Ray Goodson, Greg Stevenson, Chris Sole, Peter Wyatt, Stewart Granger, John Mclntyre (captain), Scott Mcßae, Graham Boyce, Richard Easton, Lloyd Guest, Chris Burn, David Read, Chris Duggan, David Nimmo, Steve larkson, Ricky and Mark Lanyon, Vin McCue, Frank Davies.
