Help for families
PA Dunedin The Plunket Society will open a new, mobile Karitane unit in North Otago to assist families under stress because of the drought. The director of nursing, Mrs Anne Cressey, said the psychological problems facing fanners and their families were just beginning to be recognised, but families were not getting the support they needed. Mothers were under much pressure. Children were suffering also. “One of the biggest problems is the breakdown of the family unit,” Mrs Cressey said. “It is important there is someone available to assist parents with their infants, and this is what we aim to provide with the Karitane nurse.” Mothers would be visited in their homes, and parents given a break from the children, said Mrs Cressey.
