Situations Vacant Situations Vacant PACIFIC ISLAND AFFAIRS UNIT DIRECTOR THE PACIFIC ISLAND AFFAIRS UNIT is being established to assist the Minister of Pacific Island Affairs to promote the development of Pacific Island people in New Zealand in a way which recognises and reflects Pacific Island cultural values and aspirations, so that Pacific Island people can participate and contribute fully to New Zealand’s social, cultural and economic life. The Director is the head of the Unit and will be responsible for: monitoring, reporting on and promoting issues related to Pacific Island people in New Zealand; encouraging more effective communication between the Minister of Pacific Island Affairs, Government agencies, and Pacific Island communities; providing administrative support for the Office of the Minister and the Pacific Island Affairs Advisory Council; and for the efficient and effective operation of the Unit comprising of 5 staff. REQUIREMENTS: Applicants should have demonstrated a high level of administrative and organisational expertise, and be able to communicate effectively with Ministers, senior public servants, community leaders and the Pacific Island communities. The applicants must have experience in issues involving the Pacific Island people and be able to liaise with Government agencies to promote those policies which recognise and reflect the various cultural values and aspirations of the Pacific Island people. The preferred applicant will be an effective leader, and be able to develop and work with staff from a wide variety of backgrounds and Cultures. The applicant must have good written and communication skills, be able to relate effectively and work co-operatively with individuals and groups, be sensitive to and have an empathy for Pacific Island issues and have a good clear motivation to work in this area.
