Student admits spraying slogans

A cheque for $972 was yesterday handed to Judge Cadenhead to cover compensation sought from a student, aged 20, who admitted spraying two Quill Humphries. Ltd, liquor outlets with anti-apartheid slogans. Dean Carroll (Mr J. G. Allan) was convicted on a charge of wilful damage. He was remanded on bail to June 13 for a probation report and sentence. Sergeant W. J. McCormick said. when apprehended by the police, that Carroll said he committed the offence because of his abhorrence of apartheid.

Mr Allan said his client, "an intelligent young man,” had got carried away. He had got into a discussion

with some friends and as a result had driven to the two liquor stores where he had painted the slogans. Although the idea was the intention of the group, it was his client who "carried the can, so to speak,” said Mr Allan. The next day Carroll had returned to the two shops to see about erasing the slogans only to find the company had employed a commercial firm to do the job. His client had scraped together the compensation sought, which had not been easy for him, said Mr Allan. He sought a discharge without conviction but this was refused by the Judge who said persons breaking the law in their protesting had to pay the consequences.
