Chinese get right to buy property
NZPA-Reuter Cape Town South Africa’s Chinese will from today be able to occupy or buy property in areas set aside for whites, without special permission they needed in the past. Under apartheid the small community of 10,000 Chinese is classified as nonwhite and cannot vote, but many South Africans regard them as “honorary whites.” The Constitutional Development and Planning
Minister, Mr Chris Heunis, also said that a plan for multiracial business districts in town centres would come into effect today. But the towns will still have to apply to the Government for “open” status. Most main city centres are exclusively for white proprietors, although anyone can shop in white areas. Officials said that it was unlikely any of the centres would be opened up before the end of the year.
