New driver’s licence?
PA Wellington The days of renewing the coupon on a driver’s licence may soon be over, according to the Ministry of Transport. A plastic card could be issued for a much longer term than the current book, said the Ministry’s Road Transport Division director, Mr Bill Shearer, yesterday. Long-term licences would save money, and the Minis-
ter of Transport, Mr Prebble, had given permission for the Ministry to canvass opinions on making the change, he said. What was proposed was a plastic card licence similar to that used in Britain, possibly incorporating a narrow strip with personal details of the driver on it to help identify people. Reaction to the idea, recommended at the last Automobile Association conference, had been positive so far, Mr Shearer said.
