Mt Vernon trust board

A trust board to manage Mount Vernon Park would be set up soon, the Canterbury United Council heard on Wednesday.

The Christchurch Civic Trust, which co-ordinated a fund-raising appeal to buy the $380,000 park, sent the council a draft document outlining how the Port Hills Park Trust would work. The new trust would comprise a member of Parliament; the Civic Trust’s chairman. Mr Graeme Robertson; the United Council’s chairman, Sir Hamish Hay; the Heathcote County chairman. Mr Oscar Alpers; and a representative of the people of Canterbury.

The council’s chief executive, Mr Malcolm Douglass, said the draft included everything sought by the council. It decided to endorse the draft.

Having a national science centre in Canterbury was supported in principle by the council.

A report from the Canterbury Promotion Council said the main function of the centre would be to improve education in science and technology through displays, services to schools, and illustrated public lectures.

Possible sites for the centre were studied, including the University of Canterbury, the Canterbury Museum, the Arts Centre, and the present Christchurch Girls' High School site.

Funding for the centre would be the responsibility of the Government and industry, the report said.
