R.S.I. group ‘inundated’

PA Wellington A woman who set up a support group for sufferers of repetitive strain injuries (R. 5.1. says that she has been inundated with letters and calls. About 150 people from throughout New Zealand, mainly women working in typing or word-processing jobs, have written to the organiser, Miss Margaret Gilbert, to say they suffer such injuries. “They all thought they were the only ones suffering,” she said. Repetitive strain injuries, such as sore and inflamed tendons, can occur when the

same rapid hand movement is repeated often. Their incidence has apparently mushroomed with the advent of light-touch computer keyboards. “We have got an epidemic, let’s face it,” said Miss Gilbert, who had to give up her typing job last year because of swollen hands, allegedly caused by R.S.I. Miss Gilbert is campaigning for increased awareness of the injuries, and health measures in the workplace to prevent them occurring. There also needed to be better treatment and understanding of sufferers, said Miss Gilbert.
