Homosexual law changes

Sir,—Recently you ran some large advertisements derogatory towards homosexuals and purporting to quote data from the Kinsey Report. That information did not come from the so-called Kinsey Report but from a book called “Homosexualities,” by Bell and Weinberg. Their figures apply specifically to San Francisco, undoubtedly a somewhat specialised homosexual community. Even more revealing, however, is that your advertisers completely ignored the general conclusions of this book. For example, on page 230, “Many (homosexuals) could very well serve as models of social comportment and psychological maturity. Most (homosexuals) are indistinguishable from the heterosexual majority with regard to the non-sexual aspects of their lives and whatever differences there are between homosexuals’ and heterosexuals’ social adjustment certainly do not reflect any malevolent influence on society on the part of the homosexuals concerned.” I can only conclude that “Concerned Christians” adept at selectively quoting and misinterpreting Bible passages will do the same to all other books too. — Yours, etc.,

E. R. L. WILSON. May 27, 1985.

Sir,—Bruce Morrison (“The Press,” May 24) uses the individual interpretation of Bible truth of a wide range of Christian ministers to “prove” the ambiguity of the Bible, and thus the futility of consulting it. If the same test were to be applied to the law, a similar situation would present itself; individual interpretation leads to ambiguity and thus the risk of corruption. Is the answer then to throw out the law? Integrity of the individual, or the lack of it will always determine how that individual interprets both man’s law, and God’s law. By their fruits you shall know them (Matthew vii, 16).—Yours, etc., JENIFER BARTLETT. May 24, 1985.
