Exports highest in nine years

By

MICHAEL HANNAH

in Wellington The Government has claimed success for its economic policies with the highest quarterly rise in export volumes in almost nine years. A 25.2 per cent increase in the all-groups export volume index was shown for the March quarter this year, according to figures given today by the Statistics Department. The Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Caygill, said that the rise showed that Labour’s programme to turn the economy round was working. The rise in the March quarter was the highest since the June quarter in 1976, he said. “Clearly, devaluation has benefited New Zealand’s exports,” Mr Caygill said. “Together with the Government’s other economic policies, this has improved the competitive position of the country’s export and import substitution industries. “These exports are creating jobs for New Zealanders.” The terms of trade also improved in the March quarter, rising one point above the December index to 74. This was one point lower, however, than the terms of trade recorded in March, 1984. To page 4
