Govt gives $55,000 in flood aid

PA Wellington The Government has approved emergency relief assistance of $55,000 for victims of cyclone and flood disasters in Bangladesh, said the Prime Minister, Mr Lange, yesterday.

Extending the Government’s condolences to- the President of Bangladesh, Mr Lange said that the Government and people of New Zealand had been shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic news.

“As a small island nation we know the power of the elements, but the tragedy being experienced at present is on a scale which few nations are called upon to endure.”

The cash grant of $55,000 would be channelled to the Bangladesh Red Cross Society through the League of Red Cross Societies in Geneva to provide emergency food, clothing, and medical supplies.

Three New Zealand aid agencies — Corso, the Christian World Service of the National Council of Churches, and Catholic Commission — said yesterday that they were receiving donations for the estimated 200,000 homeless victims of the devastation of coastal Bangladesh.
