Record chess entry
A record number of teams will contest the first round of “The Press” schools’ chess competition next week. Thirtyseven teams, two more than the previous best, will compete in the $4OO tournament in four grades. The draw for the first round next week (home school named first) is:— A grade.— St Bede’s v. Christchurch 8.H.5.; Linwood v. Cashmere; Burnside v. Shirley 8.H.5.; Christ’s College a bye. B grade.— Zone I: Christchurch B.H.S. B v. St Andrew’s;
Aranui v. Shirley B.H.S. C; Christ’s College B v. Papanui; Burnside B v. St Bede’s B. Zone II: Cashmere B v. Mairehau; Christchurch B.H.S. C v. Ashburton; St Thomas’s v. Shirley B.H.S. B; Hornby v. Hillmorton. C grade.— Cobham A v. Casebrook; Cathedral Grammar v. Cobham B; Heaton v. Christchurch South; Branston v. St Andrew’s Preparatory; Chisnallwood v. St Thomas’s.
