Rachael Dancer will be in demand at Ashburton

By

G. K. YULE

At first glance the eighth of Rachael Dancer last Friday at Addington Raceway might have been a rather ordinary effort and hardly a pointer to a winning run in the Manion’s Rakaia Pace, final leg of the T.A.B. treble at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting tomorrow. However, such an assessment could hardly give any indication of the merit of her run. After she had been handily enough placed, her driver, Jack Smolensk!, could not extricate her from a pocket in the run home no matter what tactics he adopted other than knocking one of his rivals to the track. She finished under a hold and took ages to steady down after passing the post. Rachael Dancer is capable of a merry mile and in this rather weak field she should prove a class above her rivals.

Maddie finished just in front of Rachael Dancer at Addington, dropping away in the straight after setting the pace for most of the 2600 m. Maddie is a sharp sprinter, and, from No. 4 at the barrier, she should make a bold bid to lead from end to end. Gold and Black has no pretentions to greatness, but she is competent, especially if kept covered up for a final spurt at the leaders. She has drawn 'the inside barrier position and should be favourably placed throughout, giving her a great chance of extending her record.

Proud News went a better race when a close fifth behind Sapphire King at Addington last Friday and he will have to improve very little to return a dividend. He is a stablemate of Rachael Dancer. Kayoss, a fair fourth at Addington, and Kotare Kashmir, are capable of showing up, but they should find Rachael Dancer more than a match.
