Lolly maker’s profit down
NZPA-Reuter Tokyo A leading Japanese confectionery firm has reported that it made a net loss of SUSI2 million in the year ended April 1 after becoming a blackmail target of a poison candy gang. Morinaga and Company Ltd said in its annual report that sales had dropped by 18.9 per cent in the year. In the previous year the company had an after-tax profit of JUSI6.9 million. The firm is one of five main food-makers victimised by the gang calling itself “The Man with 21 Faces” after a pre-war mystery novel. The gang tried to extort money by threatening to poison products on sale to the public. It wrote to the news media in February calling off its six-months-long campaign. The police said that it had not resurfaced since sending letters to two newspapers saying it would do something big by mid-year. There were no reports that the gang obtained money by its threats. \
