Police dog thwarts escape attempt

PA Auckland A police dog, Flint, thwarted the escape attempt of two prisoners by cornering them in a Newton vegetable garden. Minutes earlier, the pair had kicked open the door of a prison van in which they were being taken to Mount Eden Prison after appearing in the District Court at Henderson on aggravated robbery charges. Flint, with his handler Constable Garry Kitson, tracked the pair for 200 metres.

“I couldn’t see them anywhere until Flint poked his nose into the pumpkin patch,” Constable Kitson said later. “They were buried deep in the patch; it was an excellent hiding place. “Locals helped us in finding the escapers by pointing us in the right direction. I was about to head straight past the hiding place when Flint stopped.” The men, aged 22 and 27, will appear in the District Court at Auckland today charged with escaping from lawful custody.
