Disabled athletes win

New Zealand has taken 12 gold medals at the Australian national junior wheelchair games, in Melbourne. Eight young physically disabled athletes represented New Zealand in track and field and swimming events in the week-long games which finished on Friday. It was the first time New Zealand had sent a junior team to compete in international disabled games. In addition to the 12 gold medals, the team won five silver and four bronze medals. The gold medal winners were: Kay Walker (Hamilton), under 18 javelin, under 18 precision javelin, and under 18 discus; Danny Archer (Christchurch), under 18 discus; Ivan

Clulee (Waikouaiti), under 15 1500 m, under 15 slalom, under 15 800 m, under 15 200 m, under 15 25m backstroke, and under 15 50m freestyle; Andrew Wragge (Hamilton), under 18 800 m and under 18 1500 m. The five silver medals were won by: Andrew Ross (Auckland), under 18 shot put; Kay Walker (Hamilton), under 18 shot put; Andrew Wragge (Hamilton), under 18 200 m, under 18 25m freestyle and under 18 50m breaststroke. The bronze medal winners were: Andrew Ross (Auckland), under 18 javelin; Danny Archer (Christchurch), under 18 shot put, and under 18 400 m; Darren Ward (Mosgiel), under 15 slalom.
