An Olympic gold medallist, Les O’Connell, of Christchurch, receives a pair of special edition Levis, from Mr John Galvin, of Galvins, Ltd, Christchurch, on behalf of the Levi Strauss group in New Zealand. He was one of 12 New Zealand Olympic gold medallists to be presented with Levi’s blue jeans, with 22-carat gold-plated buttons and rivets. O’Connell won a gold medal in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics as a member of the coxless four. He also rowed in the winning eight at the world championships at Lucerne, in 1982, and in the coxed four at the world championships at Duisburg, West Germany, in 1983. O’Connell is training in Auckland with the New Zealand rowing squad for the world championships to be held at Hazewinkel, Belgium, later this year.
