Hospital service
Sir, — A recurrent hip problem has necessitated several visits to hospital over the last decade or more and I have seen a decline in the service offered that I can only attribute to staffing shortages. Successive National Governments are to blame for the disastrous situation we now find ourselves in. Cuts in spending meant fewer staff and poorer service. During my last visit, abotjj,a year ago, it was possible to go many hours without seeing a
nurse, which was very different to previous years. The staff-patient ratio in our ward was usually two to 20. Nurses complained of tiredness, with only six hours break between shifts in many cases. Recent complaints from Auckland suggest that after one year under Labour, the situation has not changed. Let us hope skeleton staff will not lead to skeletons in the beds. This matter was brought to Dr Bassett’s notice, months ago, but he felt more recruitment of staff was not necessary. — Yours, etc., F. G. STRANGE. May 26, 1985.
