Border scores fourth century

NZPA-AAP Derby Allan Border became only the fourth Australian batsman to score four successive first class centuries and only the second to do it on an England cricket tour when he annihilated another county attack in Derby yesterday. Border followed his centuries against Somerset, Worcestershire and the M.C.C. with a magnificent even hundred on a rainshortened first day of the four-day game against Derbyshire. Only Sir Donald Bradman (twice), David Hookes and Charlie Macartney had previously made four straight first class centuries, and only Macartney was able to accomplish the feat on an England tour. Border’s magnificence was mainly responsible for Australia’s cosy position at stumps. Not that 278 for five is a huge total, but that, plus what the Australians add in the morning, should be well beyond anything Derbyshire can accomplish on a pitch which will suit the New South Wales spin trio.
