Hockey rule changed
PA Wellington Hockey in New Zealand will be played under the new experimental penalty corner law from May 25. The change, announced last month by the International Hockey Federation, reduced the number of defenders permitted behind the goal-line during a penalty corner from six to five. Flick and scoop shots, previ-
ously outlawed, will also be permitted in an attempt to increase goal opportunities and stop goal-keepers lying down to deflect shots. The New Zealand Hockey Association said yesterday there would be two exceptions to the May 25 start date. They are the final day of the men’s national colts tournament and the junior women’s national tournament which will both be conducted under the old rule.
