Summit pilot badly injured
A hang-glider pilot was admitted to the intensivecare unit of Christchurch Hospital yesterday after his craft crashed near the Summit Road on the Port Hills. John Hamilton, aged 24, of Corson Avenue, Beckenham, was on the seriously ill list last evening. He had head injuries, a broken leg, and a possible broken neck. Mr Hamilton was flying near the Summit Road above Allandale when he crashed about 3 p.m. He was found by St John Ambulance personnel at 3.15 on a steep bank, 30m to 40m below the road. The Garden City Helicopters’ Hughes 500 was called in to air-lift Mr Hamilton to Hagley Park. He was taken off the hill at 4.21 p.m. and arrived at the park at 4.30 p.m. He was transferred to the hospital by ambulance.
