Fowler sets cycling record
Brian Fowler, one of New Zealand's leading cyclists, broke Blair Stockwell's old record by Imin 15s in the 55km D.B. Harbour race on Saturday. The race was run in perfect conditions with a record number of entries. Fowler jumped the scratch bunch of riders on Gebbies Pass and rode the last 30km of the race solo and from there it was virtually a time trial. Paul Leonard (Healing Papanui), off 18min, was the handicap winner, finishing 3min ahead of Fowler. Second place was taken by Sally Fraser (Hornby W.M.C.), who was off the same mark. She had an excellent ride to finish only 23s behind Leonard. Two promising juniors, Jon Andrews and Andy Macbeth, both of the Papanui club and riding off the 4min mark, had a good tussle throughout the race. Andrews just outsprinted Macbeth to take the junior title.
