Lowsley, Baker win New Brighton 10km
Tom Birnie (Bascik New Brighton) and Mary Warne (University), who won the men’s and women's Bascik 10km road running race at New Brighton last year, both had to settle for second placing in the race on Saturday. The winners were Neil Lowsley (Bascik New Brighton) and Erin Baker (Bascik New Brighton). Birnie, Lowsley and Dave Burridge (University) broke away from the rest of the field after the first of two laps and were together until Lowsley put in a withering finishing burst near the end, to win in 29min 235.
Birnie and Burridge finished together in 29:31, with Birnie getting the nodd for second by a fraction. Birnie’s time last year was 30:44.
Erin Baker, a late entry, used the race as a sharpener for the Adidas Moro half marathon next Sunday. She recorded 35:25, with Warne also bettering her last year’s time, of 36:17, in 35:51. Warne is also in the half marathon next Sunday. Two hundred and fifty two finished the 10km, while 114 completed the skm, which was one lap of the two lap course at New Brighton. Rachel Depree (University) won the girls’ under-20 section in 38:09, a time
which gave her fifth place in the women over all. Caroline Barrie (New Brighton) won the under-20 girls’ 5k section in 18:15, a time which was nearly two minutes faster than that of the fastest senior woman.
