Reading driver
Sir,—Recently, while motoring along Bealey Avenue, I was startled to see a young woman driver cutting across in front of me, without an indication that she was changing lanes. I was even more shocked to notice that she was steering the car with her left hand and reading a letter propped on the steering wheel. I really do feel that there should be more surveillance by traffic officers to curb this kind of motoring behaviour. It would be interesting to know what the statistics are for deaths and serious accidents in Bealey Avenue in the past six years alone. I have observed many in that time, and fortunately lived to tell the tale. — Yours, etc., ETHEL SOTHERAN (Mrs). May 25, 1985.
