PA Wellington A new nicotine chewing gum designed to help wean people off cigarettes has been welcomed by the Health Department and Action on Smoking and Health (Ash). Nicorette, which will be available from chemists next month, comes in two strengths — two milligrams of nicotine in each piece of

gum or four milligrams. The suggested retail price for a box of 105 pieces of 2mg strength is ?34.97 and $55.40 for the 4mg strength. The lower strength box is expected to last people about two weeks. Nicorette is available in 17 countries on prescription and the New Zealand distributor, Reckitt and Colman Pharmaceuticals, applied to have it registered as a prescription medicine. The director of Ash, Ms Deirdre Kent, said the new gum was highly priced but worth it. She said Ash had written to the Health Department asking that it be available only on prescription. Overseas studies had shown that about five per cent of people using it became dependent on the gum, so that Ash would have preferred its use to be controlled.
