Prize money at stake

The winners of the Skellerup Steeples cross-country races at Queen Elizabeth II Park, on July 6 will receive substantial training awards.

To commemorate its twentieth year of involvement in the race, Skellerup Industries has increased its sponsorship to provide training awards for the event.

The “Skellerup training awards” will mean that the first three placegetters in the senior mens and women’s sections will receive $lOOO, $5OO and $3OO respectively. Under the rules of the New Zealand Amateur Ath-

letics Association, the training awards will be held in trust by the association for the recipient to draw upon for training expenses. Fourth, fifth, and sixth placegetters in the men’s section will also receive awards.

“By revamping and increasing our sponsorship, we hope the training awards can help athletes improve their performances by assisting with training expenses and travel to large events for much needed competition,” said the marketing manager of Skellerup Industries, Mr James Little. The race will be con-

ducted by the Christchurch Amateur Athletics and Harrier Club.

The steeples, which is over 10,000 m, is one of the oldest races in New Zealand. It was first held in 1930 at Riccarton racecourse over 3% miles and was known as the Kennett Cup.

Past winners include the New Zealand representatives, Bryan Rose, Evan Maguire, Dick Tayler, Rod Dixon, John Dixon, Jack Foster, Euan Robertson, Peter Renner, and Michael Gilchrist.
